Writing Tip 1

Writing Tips Series

How to start writing? How to get your ideas on paper?

Welcome to my writing tips series and this week I am going to start from the very beginning on how to start writing.

The white paper or blinking cursor can make any writer professional or amateur lose their nerve and clam up and find other things to do other than write. Imposter syndrome kicks in and self-doubt looms over our heads; what can we do?

With all our other commitments demanding our attention, we have very limited free time – so then why do we not write furiously, feverish within that small window of time that we have. There are many reasons why we don’t work on our writing within the limited time we have and that is due to exhaustion, tired, feeling stupid or selfish and needing to be there for family.

One of the main reasons for not writing is the feeling of inadequacy; who I am to write? Who will read my words? The best advice I can give is read and start writing – small at first and then more and more each time. Start with a few sentences per day or every other day and then increase this to paragraphs and then onto chapters.

Make a point of reading and writing on a regularly basis and self-doubt will always be there, but it won’t immobilise you anymore.
